Food and Cultural Tourism (FaCT)
This project, a LEADER Transnational Project, was run in partnership with three partners- Chalk and Cheese Leader (Dorset), North Antrim Leader and Newry Institute (training provider). The project looked at the strengths of each area; Dorset and Waterford having particular experience in promoting and working with local food initiatives whereas North Antrim having a tremendous cultural resource.
A network of mentors from the cultural and local food sector were availed of from Newry Insitute. These mentors provided on-going support to assigned participants to develop and successfully complete an Action Plan.
The different strengths of each of the three areas has given an excellent opportunity to learn from each other how best to exploit food and culture and combine both as a way of bringing increased levels of tourism and economic development to these rural areas.
Cultural Exchanges
Two Visits, Three days each: To develop further understanding and raise awareness of what can be achieved course participants attended a cultural visit either to North Antrim or Dorset (which ever was the most applicable to the participant). These visits enabled the cross fertilization of ideas between participants from each area and the identification of actions that can be taken to improve business performance. Specifically, these visits looked at best practice in each area and how they can be transferred.
Three Day Visit to Waterford: Waterford Leader Partnership was first of the three partners to host the Cultural Exchange Visit. This took place between March 21st -23rd. Having visited various local food producers and providers in the county, our partners from North Antrim and Dorset felt it had been an incredible beneficial experience and gave them plenty of 'food for thought' in returning home.
