Waterford County Museum

Dungarvan_Museum_1

This project received funding under the Rural Development Programme as administered by Waterford Leader Partnership under the Basic Services for the Economy and Rural Population measure of the programme

Waterford County Museum, located in the old town hall, Dungarvan, was initially founded in 1984 as the Dungarvan Museum Society.  The aims of the society are as follows:

-          To preserve the history of Dungarvan and Co-Waterford

-          To acquire and preserve individual items and collections of interest

-          To encourage public interest in local history

-          To publish original research in book form or on the museum website.

Since then, the museum has evolved over time and is now one of the most prominent in the area having won a number of awards over the years including the Best Small Museum Website in the world in 2006.  The museum is run by a voluntary committee and has staff on the FAS CE scheme for the day to day running of the project.

In 2007, the museum building was refurbished entirely both inside and out, with the external cost borne by Dungarvan Town Council and the museum looking after the cost of the internal refurbishment.  This was achieved through fund raising, grants and donations.  Since then, the museum society has continuously improved their surrounds and in 2010 applied to Waterford Leader Partnership for funding under the Rural Development Programme.  The project consisted of upgrading the lighting system by fitting specific conservation standard spotlights throughout the museum and by purchasing 3 new conservation standard cases for exhibition and displays.  They will also purchase a new pop up banner which will be placed at the entrance to the museum, thus making it more inviting to visitors.
