On January 26th and 27th 10 County Waterford Local Employment Service Clients participated in a Primary Course in Food Safety. The programme was funded by the Local Community Development Programme (LCDP), which is coordinated by Waterford Leader Partnership Ltd. (WLP Ltd.), and was offered to increase the employability of its participants.

The aim of the course is to provide food workers with adequate training in the basic principles of food safety. Modules covered included Introduction to Food Safety; Microbiological Hazards; Food Contamination; HACCP from Food Delivery to Storage; HACCP from Food Preparation to Cooking Service; Personal Hygiene; Food Premises and Equipment; Pest Control; Cleaning and Disinfection; Food Safety Law and Enforcement.

The programme, which is certified by the Environmental Health Officers Association, was delivered by local Trainer, Colette Bannon. To help participants understand the information and prepare for the exam, Colette, who has 20 years of catering management experience provided many real life-experiences that emphasized to the students the importance and benefits of good food hygiene.

The LES assists job seekers with taking those practical steps needed to secure employment, training and educational opportunities. Assistance is provided with CV’s; Job Applications; Interview Preparation. An Information Room is available with Waterford County & City; Cork County & City and South Tipperary newspapers, including FAS touch-screen job vacancy listings (Info Room is open to all Job-Seekers). The LES is a free service to all individuals in receipt of a Social Welfare payment.

The LES (Co-ordinated by WLP Ltd. under contract to FAS) is based at 21, Church Street, Dungarvan (or by appointment on a Thursday afternoon in WLP Ltd. offices in Mayfield, Lismore).
