Waterford LEADER Partnership, through funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Walks Scheme Development Fund, has completed essential repairs to the Mt. Melleray Pilgrim Paths.
The Byrne’s Bridge Loop, one of five Pilgrim Paths beginning at Mt. Melleray Abbey, is a 12km hiking trail that allows walkers to explore the Knockmealdown Mountains. The trail required significant works, including:
- Removal of damaged and weathered footbridges
- Installation of a piped drainage system
- Groundworks to address previous erosion
Waterford LEADER Partnership secured over €7,500 to complete these works. The work has significantly slowed the erosion of the trail, provided a safer walker experience and allowed access for emergency vehicles to access this section of the mountains.
