Mt. Melleray Abbey Closure: Pilgrim Path Walking Trails Remain Open to Visitors

Mt. Melleray Abbey in Co. Waterford, a 200-year-old site of deep historical and spiritual significance, has sadly closed. However, the scenic Mt. Melleray Pilgrim Paths remain open to the public, ensuring continued access to this iconic West Waterford landmark.

While the Abbey itself may no longer be accessible, the network of Pilgrim Paths surrounding it remains open, offering visitors the opportunity experience the stunning landscape of Co. Waterford and the Knockmealdown Mountains. These trails, which guide walkers through lush woodlands, open fields, and rolling hills, have long been a cherished feature of the Abbey’s grounds.

The continued maintenance of these trails is supported by Waterford LEADER Partnership and the Walks Scheme, a programme from the Department of Rural and Community Development which contracts landowners to maintain walking trails which cross their land. The scheme supports the 5 Mt. Melleray Pilgrim paths – The Cross, The Well, The Grotto, the Source, and Byrnes Bridge – as well as St. Declan’s Way which also passes through Mt. Melleray.

Each Pilgrim Path at Mt. Melleray has it’s own unique features and attractions, with trails ranging from easy to challenging. This makes them accessible to walkers of all skill levels and ideal for families, groups, or individuals to enjoy at their own pace.

The Mt. Melleray Pilgrim Paths are open year-round and free to access. Visitors are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and bring water, as the trails traverse varied terrain.
